The National Institute of Open
Schooling (NIOS) has several objectives, including:
Ø Education programs: Developing education programs that meet the needs of the people.
Ø Open and Distance Learning (ODL): Strengthening the ODL system through research and
development.
Ø Open schooling promotion: Promoting open schooling at the national and global level.
Ø Professional advice: Providing professional advice to the government and states.
Ø Learner support: Accrediting institutions to develop learner support systems.
Ø Study centers:
Establishing study centers in institutions, organizations, and agencies in
India and abroad.
Ø Examinations:
Conducting examinations and issuing certificates to successful learners.
Ø Equivalency Programme: Partnering with the National Literacy Mission to provide
education and certification to neo-literates.
Ø Quality of learning: Promoting quality of learning in ODL through monitoring, supervision,
and evaluation.
Ø Data base:
Establishing a data base on Open Schooling.
Ø Resource organization: Acting as a resource organization and capacity building
center in open schooling.
Ø Collaboration:
Collaborating with national and international organizations to promote open
schooling.
Ø Government schemes: Partnering with government schemes and programs at the school sector.
Ø Professional consultation: Providing professional or technical consultation in the
field of ODL.
